Board of Directors
Craig R. Travis, M.D., Founder and Chairman
In the more than 40 years that Dr. Travis had been a practicing board-certified emergency physician, the six years he spent in Negril Jamaica (1988-1994) ultimately became the most consequential of his life with the need to reconcile the widespread use of cannabis in a highly promiscuous population with the astonishingly low prevalence of HIV. This led him on a scientific venture in collaboration with other researchers to establish that a novel non-psychoactive derivative of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) effectively increased the thickness of organotypic vaginal tissue suggesting that it may provide a barrier to the acquisition of HIV disease. However, having recognized the potential rejuvenating properties that the compound might have for atrophied vaginal tissue due to the lack of estrogen, he has redirected Immugen’s research effort to its use as a non-hormonal treatment of the genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) for which he was recently awarded a patent (2021).
As an inventor with four patents for the use of synthetic, non-psychoactive derivatives of THC for the treatment and prevention of HIV, he will continue to explore the potential of our lead compounds for their effects to enhance the integrity of mucosal tissue and its defense that will add to our intellectual property portfolio to ensure that our breakthroughs in science and medicine will benefit all stakeholders – investors and patients alike.
